Comune di Casale Monferrato

Palazzo San Giorgio (UK)

Period: It was partially rebuilt in 1775; the construction work  was completed in 1778

Project: It was designed by Filippo Nicolis Robilant (Turin 1723-1783)

Present Use: Since 1885 it has housed the Municipality of Casale Monferrato

Façade: It is split into three tiers with windows surrounded by stucco. The portal, which consists of twin columns, is surmounted by a balcony with a marble balustrade. A plaque on the façade dates back to 1888 and was made by the Turinese sculptor Santino Bianchi to commerate the Casalese who fell at the battle of Dogali

The Courtyards:  To the right of the entrance is an arcade enclosed by an iron railing with the arms of the Gozani family embossed on it. To be found in the arcade are the busts of Mayors Oggero and Savio, the plaque commemorating Giovanni Cabria by Luigi Bistolfi (Casale Monferrato 1859 – la Loggia 1933) and the bronze tondo by Odoardo Tabacchi (Valganna 1831 – Milan 1909).  The vestibule, to the left of the entrance, leads to the room under the grand staircase, which has a vaulted ceiling embellished with stucco. The courtyard overlooks the sixteenth century wing of the structure

The Interior: The main staircase is adorned with four marble cherubs representing the four seasons, sculpted by Giovanni Battista Bernero (1736-1796). The ground floor gives on to a large room which used to be the ball room and which today is the assembly hall of the local council.  On the vaulted ceiling there are frescoes painted by Francesco Lorenzi (1723-1787), inserted in a frame painted by Guidolini, depicting Apollo with Pegasus and the Muses. The other rooms are decorated with frescoes and fanlights painted by Lorenzi as well as some fireplaces and period furniture designed by Lorenzo Marini (Torino, documented from 1769 to 1798). In the sixteenth century wing of the building there is a ceiling painted by Guala (Casale Monferrato 1698 – Milan 1757) depicting figures of Bacchus and Ariadne being received in heaven by Venus and Cupid, inserted in a frame by the Bolognese painter G.A. Bettini
